New 2024 Chevy Silverado EV: The First Chevrolet Electric Pickup Truck Review

Posted on

2024 Chevy Silverado this time surprised by the EV version, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV may be late to the electric pickup party, but from the initial look, we seem worth the wait.

Rivian, Ford, GMC, and Tesla have set high expectations for range, power, and towing. To match that, the Silverado EV offers a range of up to 400 miles, up to 664 horsepower, and a crane rating worth 10,000 pounds.

Two trim levels will be available, to begin with. Chevy’s quoted price—is $105,000 for the fully charged RST on display, and $39,900 for the fleet-oriented base and WT—excluding the destination, which is $1695 for the current non-electric Silverado.

Chevy says these two prices represent the Silverado EV price spectrum and the upcoming trim level will be somewhere in between.

The Silverado EV is about the same length and height as a regular cabin crew, the Silverado short bed, but the only thing the two trucks share is part of their name. The Silverado EV wasn’t even assembled in the same factory. Instead, it’s built on a narrower version of the basics of the GMC Hummer EV.

That means independent front and rear suspension, front and rear electric motors (though two of them, not three Hummers), and a 200.0 kWh battery pack available with an estimated range of 400 miles.

Also, like the Hummer EV, the Silverado EV has an electrical architecture capable of charging at 800 volts and 350 kW allowing it to increase its range by 100 miles in just 10 minutes, according to Chevrolet.

It should be noted that substantial range figures are for trucks with 24-inch wheels, which is standard at the level of the first available trim, RST. The WT has 18-inch wheels, and although Chevy says the WT will be available with a range of 400 miles, it has not addressed the effect of those wheels on the estimated range.

We’re also unaware of the $39,900 WT price range, but we expect it to be like the lower trim level of the Hummer EV, which GMC currently estimates will range from 250 to 300 miles.

Where the WT boasts 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque, the RST has a driving mode called “Wide Open Watts” (WOW, got it?) That allows 664 horsepower and 780 pounds-feet of torque.

In this mode, Chevy says zero to 60 mph acceleration will be better than 4.5 seconds, which makes it faster than Ford’s claim for the most powerful F-150 Lightning.

Although Chevy has not said how much power the RST has in its regular mode, it should not be lower than the output of the WT.

Despite sharing its electric powertrain with the brash GMC Hummer EV, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV resembles a more classic electric pickup truck.

2024 Chevy Silverado EV

The available midgate design allows users to fold the wall between the bed and cab for additional storage space, a feature that may remind some of the now-discontinued Avalanche pickup truck. from the early 2000s.

The large battery pack is said to provide a range of up to 400 miles per charge and DC fast charging technology can charge a battery with a range of 100 miles in just 10 minutes.

The dual electric motors provide standard all-wheel drive and up to 664-hp, and the Silverado EV will be able to pull up to 10,000 pounds and carry up to 1,300 pounds of payload.

Chevrolet has not released full specifications and information about the pickup but said it will build it in Michigan at the same plant that will build the Hummers.

When it goes on sale, the Silverado EV will face stiff competition from the Ford F-150 Lightning as well as rookie offerings such as the Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck.

The Silverado EV will be a new product in the Chevrolet range and is expected to debut as a 2024 model and go on sale sometime in 2023.

2024 Chevy Silverado EV Interior »

We were able to peek into the loaded RST model and be impressed with what we saw. The truck featured a fixed glass roof, black-and-white two-color leather upholstery with red pipes, and almost the same passenger space as a regular Silverado crew cabin pickup truck.

Instead of a console-mounted shifter, Chevrolet designers have chosen a column-mounted stalk, which creates space for a large storage bin between the dashboard and the middle armrest.

All models will come with mostly digital dashboards, with an 11.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.0-inch digital measuring screen as standard. Upgrading to a top-tier RST unlocks a larger 17.0-inch infotainment screen and an 11.0-inch measuring screen.

Both systems can be reconfigured to the driver’s preferences, but fortunately, climate control sticks with a simple analog knob mounted on a thin panel at the bottom of the dashboard for easy access.

Chevrolet hasn’t released all the information for the Silverado EV infotainment system yet, but we expect Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to come standard, with navigation on the dashboard, SiriusXM satellite radio, and on-board Wi-Fi hotspots also a part. of the package.

2024 Chevy Silverado EV Exterior »

To house the stunning high-performance Ultium 24-module battery pack, the Silverado body has changed, making it look bolder and more capable than ever. First of all, the Silverado EV will be offered exclusively in Crew Cab models with shorter overhangs.

In addition to improving forward visibility, this overhang enhances the aesthetics of the exterior by adding to its strength. The front end has been redesigned to direct air into the body, reducing turbulence and drag.

Because of this, the WT is projected to have one of the lowest drag coefficients of all full-size pickup trucks, which contributes to an impressive 400-mile range.

Of course, exterior changes are also often seen on the inside, as is the case with the new Silverado EV. The second row of seats is pushed back, meaning the rear passenger experience will be much more comfortable, especially for taller passengers. In addition, these rear seats are designed with 40/60 separation, allowing for more dynamic storage within the vehicle’s cabin.

The bed has also picked up its game as a 5-foot 11-inch bed is available with a Midgate Multi-Flex entrance between the cabin and the bed. When open, the midgate provides storage of more than nine feet with the tailgate upwards. So, storage won’t be an issue at all on this new Silverado EV.

ULTIUM PLATFORM with Outstanding Performance »

The Ultrium platform is truly at the heart of GM’s zero-emission electric vehicle strategy. Built from the ground up on the new platform, the Silverado EV has a 24-module Ultium battery pack, which gives the vehicle a stunning range, estimated at 400 miles at full charge; it was Silverado’s number there.

Speaking of Silverado numbers, the iconic nameplate certainly doesn’t lose its stunning performance capabilities by using electricity; instead, they increase.

The Ultrium platform allows the truck to be up to 664 horsepower (more than 240 horsepower increased from its traditional 6.2L V8) and 780 pound-feet of torque in Wide Open Watt Mode. Result? The time of 0-60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds.

What’s more, the vehicle’s chassis has independent front and rear suspension for greater comfort, and when power is transferred to the available 24-inch wheels (on the RST), the standard e4WD system will tear the road.

The four-wheel steering capability makes the Silverado EV more maneuverable in tight spaces and more stable at high speeds, so you’ll have an easier time driving this new vehicle. Interestingly, the presence of Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension in the RST trim allows the vehicle to raise or lower up to two inches.

So for those who are having trouble parting ways with your old Silverado gasoline or diesel engine, rest assured that this EV is a worthy successor.

Simple and Fast Charging

The impressive Ultium 2024 Chevy Silverado EV platform will make the Silverado perform at a level you’ve never seen before. To keep you on the road enjoying its exciting performance features, the 2024 Silverado EV should offer convenient charging. It is made very easy due to its in-vehicle capabilities and its connectivity to charging stations.

Both the RST and WT trims have high-voltage DC fast charging capability of up to 350 kW; in other words, you can add a range of 100 miles in just 10 minutes. It’s something to be excited about. The Silverado EV can also charge other EVs and power electrical devices, so you can also share power with others.

Silverado EV enters the market at the right time; due to the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, there has been a correlated increase in public charging stations. However, since it’s not as common as gas stations yet, Chevy helps drivers not only get easy access but also efficient access to chargers.

The Energy Assist feature in the myChevrolet Mobile App helps drivers plan energy-efficient routes during trailers to save power and have easy access to chargers.

In addition, RST offers the Ultium Charge 360, which is GM’s holistic approach to EV charging that includes access to more than 100,000 public charging points in the United States and Canada. Chevy always makes sure that your Silverado EV is well charged at all times. Reasonable

The Evolution of Technology

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will go all out with technology. It not only improves its technological features but also develops it, making it more adaptable to the needs of sustainable drivers.

First of all, a 17-inch LCD infotainment touch screen is placed on the front of the vehicle, giving the driver and front passengers easy access to all the comfort and entertainment features that the driver expects. This 17-inch screen also produces a sleek interior.

The infotainment screen is equipped with an 11-inch driver information system, combined with a 14-inch driver head-up display.

Silverado EV drivers will have no trouble getting information while on the road, and you will be more in touch with your vehicle than ever before due to this increase in information.

Improvements are the theme of the new Silverado EV: eco-friendly upgrades, improved performance capabilities, space upgrades, and improved technology features.

But, it’s not just the increase in size and number of interesting screens; it is the adaptability of the software that supports them as well.

Cutting-Edge Software Design

Silverado EV driver, meet Ultifi. The new software was developed in-house by Chevy and is separate from the vehicle’s hardware, allowing them to update it with high frequencies and providing drivers with the most advanced technology available as soon as it is launched, without having to buy a new vehicle.

Silverado has always been a leading model, and will now consistently lead its drivers with over-the-air updates to ensure that they are always driving at optimal levels.

Chevy has always been dedicated to progress, and this is a big step forward. Now progress will not only occur from vehicle to vehicle but will allow the vehicle to develop over time. Just when you think Chevy can’t go any further, they do.

2024 Chevy Silverado EV Work Truck »

At launch, the Silverado EV will be offered under the guise of a Work Truck (WT) leading the price as well as in the off-road Trail Boss and loaded RST trim, but Chevy says mid-range trim will be added later to complement the lineup.

The WT model will sell for $39,900 before the destination, but it lacks many of the truck’s coolest features. Instead, we’ll shoot high for the Trail Boss or RST or wait for a well-equipped mid-range trim to be available.

Unlike the Hummer EV, which is equipped with three electric motors, the Silverado EV will be powered by two. The setup should still provide strong acceleration performance and, in the top-spec RST, Chevrolet claims a horsepower rating of at least 664 hp; the WT base trim fits 510 hp.

All-wheel drive is standard as is the case with a four-wheel steering system. Buyers of RST models will find that their trucks are equipped with adaptive air suspension; a large, cool-looking set of 24-inch wheels is optional.

The Boss Trail model will likely add differential locking, fat all-terrain tires, and other adventure-ready items to the Silverado EV suspension. When we get a chance to test drive the Silverado EV, we’ll update this story with a driving show.

At launch, the maximum towing capacity of the Silverado EV was 10,000 pounds for the RST model and 8000 pounds for the WT. Chevrolet said that a model with a towing capacity of 20,000 pounds will eventually join the lineup.
