2023 Chevy Tahoe: New Chevrolet Tahoe Full-Size SUV Expert Review

Posted on

2023 Chevy Tahoe plans to offer hands-free driving technology in its big SUVs for 2023, but with a chip shortage, will it really be able to do so?

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban 2023 are the latest General Motors models to offer the Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system. Or at least that’s what the brand wants.

We’re betting Chevy feels pretty sure it can get the semiconductor chips needed to bring the Super Cruise to these two full-size SUVs for the 2023 model year.

Otherwise, the bowtie brand will definitely back off announcing this information until it has a firmer understanding of its semiconductor chip situation.

However, it’s entirely possible Chevy released this information under the guise of “hoping for the best but planning for the worst.”

If the worst does happen, and Chevy pulls the Super Cruise off the Tahoe and Suburban 2023 selection sheet, then buyers of this big SUV will find the brand making only a few very minor changes for the new model year.

Three new exterior colors (Silver Sage Metallic, Sterling Gray Metallic, and Radiant Red Tintcoat) are added to the color palette of both vehicles, while a new accessory grille, which removes the bowtie badge for the Chevrolet name, is available in LS, LT, RST, and Premier trims.

That said, if Chevy does manage to get the Super Cruise to Tahoe and Suburban 2023, then consumers of these models should plan on spending a lot of money on a Level 2 driving assistance system, as it’s limited to the expensive Premier and High Country SUVs. trim.

  • Chevy plans to add the Super Cruise to the Tahoe and Suburban by 2023.
  • This technology is limited to high-end Premier and High Country trims.
  • Semiconductor shortages, however, could eventually affect Chevy’s plans.

2023 Chevy Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe was one of the last major truck-based SUVs on the market, offering a large interior with seating for between seven and nine people, impressive towing capacity, and a surprisingly low fuel economy rating.

2023 Chevy Tahoe

We expect nothing to change for the 2023 model year, as Tahoe will likely return as a carryover model.

Chevrolet has tried to make the Tahoe a little more aerodynamic to add some extra MPG, but in the end, it’s still bricked with wheels.

However, it does allow it to have a spacious interior with up to 122.9 cubic feet of space, a figure that’s only seriously lost on the larger (but closely related) Chevrolet Suburban.

The Tahoe is perfect for transporting larger families on vacation travel, with three rows of comfortable seating, plenty of cargo space to spare, and neat features like an optional rear entertainment system.

Tahoe is offered three engine options. Most get a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower, while a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp is available at higher trim levels as an option.

There’s also a 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel that offers the best fuel economy of the three at a combined 24 mpg, which is a 7 mpg increase from the base 5.3 liters.

All-wheel drive is standard on the top Premier and High Country trim levels and optional on all other models, while a 10-speed automatic transmission complements all models.

The Tahoe comes standard with lane guard assistance, automatic high light, rear parking sensors, and front automatic emergency braking.

Other features such as adaptive cruise control, reverse automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera are available as you climb through a trim or select options.

2023 Tahoe SS

2023 Tahoe SS Ready to ship in Chevy Tahoe SS 2023. If you don’t think the Chevy Tahoe has enough power, give it a few months.

2023 Chevy Tahoe

The high-performance SS model could be here before you know it, giving this three-row SUV a boost in speed.

2023 Chevy Tahoe SS But what is the Chevy Tahoe SS? The SS is usually included with the names of the ships.

The letters refer to the ship’s propulsion mode. For example, SS is called steamship, and MV means motorboat.

While the Tahoe was as big as a boat, it wasn’t a threaded steamer. The Chevy Tahoe SS 2023 actually means Super Sport.

It can serve as a high-performance model to satisfy drivers who want a big ride with a need for speed.

One rumor suggests that the new Chevrolet Tahoe SS could have a two-door model. However, we don’t think so.

The Tahoe is known to be huge, but perhaps the Blazer SS can be considered a more traditional high-performance model.

The Tahoe SS 2023 will most likely be a four-door model with more than enough power to make it fly.

Currently, the most powerful engine in the Tahoe lineup is the 6.2-liter V8 engine. It pumps out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

With this engine, the Tahoe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, which is impressive.

But it could be faster. Rumors suggest that the Tahoe SS could get a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 LT4 engine from the Camaro ZL1.

This engine makes 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, which is a pretty big upgrade. With this engine, the Chevy Camaro ZL1 can reach 60 mph in about four seconds.

That’s not far behind the Dodge Durango Hellcat which can hit 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds.

But the Chevy Tahoe is a little different from the Camero. It may not have the same amount of power and speed due to its larger size and heavier weight. Also, some rumors about a new hybrid engine are circulating.

Plus, the Cadillac Escalade V 2023 was recently announced. It uses a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 668 hp and 648 lb-ft of torque from the Blackwing CT5-V.

However, the official specifications have not been released, and the engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Escalade V is expected to come with a luxurious price tag, so the Chevy Tahoe SS will provide customers with a more affordable high-performance SUV.

We could learn more about the 2023 Chevy Tahoe SS soon. The photographer had chased Tahoe around in full camouflage. So even if the Tahoe SS isn’t the next quirky trim, something cool is on the way.

We’ll learn more about the Cadillac Escalade V 2023 this spring. So, maybe an announcement about the new Tahoe will be made around the same time.

Things to expect with the Chevy Tahoe SS include a unique grille, new wheel design, revised taillights, improved brakes, and possibly adaptive air suspension.

The interior could be refreshed to include racing elements and updated technology as well.

2023 Chevy Tahoe Exterior

At 17.5 feet long, the full-size Tahoe 2023 SUV covers the same kind of trail (tire print?) as the Ford Expedition.

That’s big. Viewers may think there is a solar eclipse, but the eclipse takes longer to pass.

The LS and LT have 18-inch alloy wheels, the Z71 and Premier have optional 20-inch alloy wheels on the lower trim, and the High Country model uses 22-inch alloy wheels (optional with Premier).

The LS also comes with side ladders as standard, which the Z71 ditches in pursuit of optimal ground clearance.

This year’s changes include a black grille with LS, LT, RST, and Premier trims, with the word “Chevrolet” in capital letters replacing the regular logo.

New paint options for 2023 are Silver Sage Metallic, Sterling Gray Metallic, and Radiant Red Tintcoat.

2023 Suburban Interior

One of the few options in the base LS trim is a 3-seater for the front row, turning the Tahoe 2023 SUV into a 9-seater.

2023 Chevy Tahoe

The LT, RST, and Z71 versions accommodate eight people, with an optional pair of captain’s seats for the second row reducing the number of passengers to seven.

The Premier and High Country models have these seats as standard and are therefore exclusive to 7 seats.

This most expensive trim comes with a powerful moving center console 10 inches from front to back. These include secure storage, cup holders, and sliding armrests. It’s also optional in the lower trim, except for the LS.

Each Tahoe has a spacious 2023 Chevrolet Suburban Interior.

There’s a maximum of 42 inches of legroom in the slidable second row and 34.9 inches in the third row. The Cargo area is also on the generous side, from 25.5 to 122.9 cubic feet.

2023 Chevy Tahoe Favorite Features

  • STANDARD WIRELESS APPLE CARPLAY/ANDROID AUTO
The ability to connect a smartphone to the vehicle’s infotainment system is great, but it’s been a bit neglected lately. The Chevy Tahoe 2023 runs better without a wired connection, so users can keep their phones in their pockets or bag.
  • DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER
This 12.3-inch digital display comes standard in the one-top-of-the-base LT trim and complements state-of-the-art technology for the 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen that is also present at this trim level.

Standard Features

There have been some complaints about the availability of certain features in the full-size Tahoe 2023 SUV lineup.

For example, buyers had to choose one of the top two trims just to qualify for adaptive cruise control. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

At the entry level, the LS version still has a decent standard of inventory.

This includes LED headlights/daylights/taillights, rain sensing wipers, heated mirrors, remote start, keyless entry/ignition, power-adjustable front seats, fabric upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control 3 -zone, Teen Driver programmable lock, front/rear parking sensors, rear seat reminder, and a pair of 120-volt power outlets.

Apple CarPlay/Android Auto wireless is also standard, along with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Wi-Fi, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and six USB ports (including one USB-C up front).

Safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, plus automatic high light and lane maintenance assistance.

Factory Option

With a pleasing design like the LS trim, choosing the LT model is still a smarter call – as long as finances allow.

In addition to offering more options than the LS, additional tech features include a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver information display, navigation, wireless phone charging, and a 9-speaker Bose audio system, and Google Assistant compatibility.

Other items included in the LT trim are heated front seats, driver seat memory settings, hands-free tailgate operation, auto-dimming mirrors, and a universal garage door opener.

The RST model is pretty much a collection of cosmetic changes, but it does offer a Sports Performance package that features a larger petrol V8 and adaptive suspension.

The Z71 has 4-wheel drive and all-terrain tires as standard while also having a larger V8 and adaptive suspension on its list of options.

The LT, RST, and Z71 zones are where many options are available. These include blind-spot monitoring with rear traffic warning (also available on the LS), an adjustable/heated steering wheel, heated second-row outboard seats, and a 360-degree camera system.

Most of these additions come standard at the Premier level, which is also equipped with a 10-speaker Bose system, Safety Alert Seat, heated/ventilated front seats, and adaptive suspension.

The High Country gets a 360-degree camera system, plus a head-up view, rear view mirror, rear pedestrian warning, and a larger V8 engine.

The Premier and High Country have Super Cruise, adaptive cruise control, panoramic sunroof, power retractable side steps, and air suspension (also available on the Z71) on their list of options.

The 2023 Tahoe Colors, Chevy Tahoe SUV, and Chevy Suburban both received new generation updates for the 2021 model year, with the Chevy Tahoe entering its fifth generation, and the Chevy Suburban entering its twelfth generation.

2023 Chevy Tahoe Driving

Various versions of the full-size Tahoe 2023 SUV offer Magnetic Ride Control suspension or adaptive air suspension, but even the regular setup is comfortable and well-tuned.

A long walk in Tahoe is something to be enjoyed rather than experienced.

Either of the two available V8 engines will do the job, each powerful enough not to feel overworked.

And the optional turbocharged diesel engine combines low-end thrust with greater fuel economy — ideal for hiking on mountain roads.

The Z71 has a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system as standard, equipped with a low-range transfer case.

Also includes all-terrain tires and extra underbody protection. In case any owner heeds the wild call of the unpaved, the Tahoe’s ground clearance is 8 inches or 10 inches with air suspension.

The Super Cruise is a new option in the top Premier and High Country trims. It is a hands-free and foot-free partial self-driving system that works on certain freeways, the number of which is growing as more accesses to the navigation system database.

In theory, this is all good. In practice, a global chip shortage (thank you very much, Covid) can mean late availability.

2023 Chevy Tahoe Engine & Transmission

The base engine for the Tahoe 2023 SUV lineup is a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter V8 engine (no turbo or anything) that makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Regular gasoline is fine for this unit.

2023 Chevy Tahoe

The RST, Z71, and Premier trims offer the option of a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It’s also standard in the top High Country trims. Premium gasoline is recommended in this case.

Another option besides the Z71 is the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 diesel engine that produces 277 horsepower and the same amount of torque as the larger V8.

All three engines are connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is the standard setting, with 4-wheel drive (4WD) on the options list or standard on the Z71.

These fuel savings estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) relate to 2022, but 2023 should be the same.

  • 5.3 liter V8
  • 355 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm
  • Torque 383 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm
  • EPA city/highway Fuel economy: 15/20 mpg (RWD & 4WD)

  • 420 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm
  • Torque 460 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm
  • EPA city/highway Fuel economy: 14/20 mpg (RWD), 14/19 mpg (4WD)
  • 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-6. diesel
  • 277 horsepower @ 3,750 rpm
  • Torque 460 lb-ft @ 1,500 rpm
  • EPA city/highway Fuel economy: 21/28 mpg (RWD), 20/26 mpg (4WD)

2023 Chevy Tahoe Price

Prices start at $52,000 for the LS version of the full-size 3-row Tahoe 2023 SUV. Other trim levels are LT, RST, Z71 (with 4-wheel drive as standard), Premier, and High Country. A well-specified top version can run up to $80K.

These numbers are similar to the rest of the class, with the Nissan Armada slightly lower and the new GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia for 2023 slightly more expensive.

2023 Chevy Tahoe Release Date

No release date has been announced yet, but according to the fleet production bulletin, the Chevrolet will start taking orders in May with production starting in mid-July.

However, global chip shortages can cause problems that result in such time shifts.
